Even if you do not follow health news very closely, you may have heard the term GMO being tossed around frequently. It can be confusing to know what exactly GMO is and why you should stay clear of it without getting a whole science lesson. Here are just a few concise things that everyone needs to know about GMO and their health.
- GMOs are everywhere, but you probably don’t know it. GMO stands for genetically modified organisms and are foods that were genetically engineered so that they can survive weed-killing chemicals and pesticides. The most common GMO foods are corn, soy, cotton, canola, and sugar beets. That may seem like an easy list to avoid, but those products are in almost everything. Corn is used as animal feed in majority of the meats we eat, it is also hiding in several packaged products as corn syrup or corn oil. Soy has also been added to many processed foods and as fillers in processed meat products, such as chicken nuggets. The sad thing is that in America it is not required to label GMO products.
- GMOs have not been tested for long-term health effects. So far genetically altered food has been found to cause food allergies and possible organ damage. However, no official tests have been done to see the long term affects on health.
- GMOs are making nature a tougher competitor. Not only are GMOs ruining the soil and crops, but they are also making the weeds stronger. It is the same thing that happens with superbugs and flus when antibiotics are used too frequently. Like our advancing flu bugs, the weeds are morphing to overcome the GMO technology.
- GMOs are banned outside the US. Many countries have banned American foods because of the GMOS and antibiotics used. It should tell us something about our food source when individuals in Haiti burned the GMO seeds rather than used them for food. Yes, the tragedy that happened in Haiti a few years back wiped them out of their resources, but they still knew that GMO would only make their land and people’s health worse.
There is a lot of news going around about GMOs, and it can be easy to brush it off thinking it isn’t that big of a deal. However, it is a big deal that can rob our foods of their nutrition and continue to rob us of our health. So what’s the solution? Right now the best thing that can be done is to buy products that are clearly marked non-GMO. Most of these are organic products or pricier, but it is worth it for you and your family’s health.
