With all of the joy that pregnancy brings, it can also bring a lot of annoying and painful side effects. One of the more annoying symptoms that is common during pregnancy is heartburn.
Heartburn can happen at any time during pregnancy, but it becomes more common and prevalent later on in pregnancy when the baby is bigger. If pregnancy heartburn is keeping you awake at night or waking you up in the middle of a good nights sleep, then chiropractic care may be the answer for you.
Can Chiropractic Care Help with Pregnancy Heartburn?
One case study in 2012 recorded the benefits of chiropractic care to a 32-year old woman who was 24 weeks pregnant. Before she turned to chiropractic care for her daily heartburn, she was treating her condition with daily over the counter heartburn medications such as Zantac and Tums. While Zantac is deemed safe for pregnancy, there is also not a lot of research done on the effects it has on childbirth or the baby. Not to mention that regular over the counter medication can be quite pricey and a nuisance to take.
After five visits with the chiropractor, the patient was symptom-free and did not use any more medication throughout the duration of her pregnancy.
So can chiropractic care help cure heartburn in every pregnant woman? Chiropractic care can certainly help with many pregnancy related symptoms, from morning sickness to hip pain to heartburn. However, the role of a chiropractor is not to solve heartburn directly. Instead, the role of the chiropractor is to adjust the spine and fix any subluxations, or misalignments in the spine.
Since the spine and nervous system can drastically affect many areas of the body and a person’s health, then it should be no surprise that having a healthy spine clears up pre-existing health issues. For example, chiropractors do not claim they can cure infertility in woman. However, many women who receive regular wellness adjustments find themselves able to conceive all because their spine and nervous system are functioning optimally, which helps their reproductive systems to work optimally too.
The same principle applies to chiropractic care and pregnancy heartburn. The heartburn could be brought on by subluxations in the spine that are affecting how the digestive system runs. In this case, several wellness adjustments could help relieve heartburn for the rest of the pregnancy. However, some heartburn is also caused by poor eating habits or just the position the baby is lying. In these cases, chiropractic care may help improve the situation, but it will not relieve it entirely.
