These Unhealthy Habits Can Make Your Back Pain Worse

We try our best, but we’re all guilty of indulging in the occasional bad habit or two, even when we know it’s not good for our overall health. I’m not trying to shame anyone here, because I’ve certainly been guilty of chowing down on cookies late into the night — and that’s just one of the better bad habits I’ve fallen into. Unfortunately, it’s easy to pick up bad habits in this society, and unhealthy habits can lead to a wide variety of health issues down the line. Back pain is no exception. If you’ve ever experienced a bout of stiffness or aches in your back without a clear reason as to why it may be occuring, take a moment to reflect on some of the bad habits you may have picked up to see if they may be causing your discomfort. 

Poor Diet

As I’ve admitted, I’m no stranger to snacking on junk food from time to time. Obviously, indulging in too much unhealthy food can lead to weight gain, but this can cause back pain as well. First of all, foods which are high in sugar or fat content tend to increase inflammation in the body, which creates discomfort in the joints and soft tissues. Furthermore, any excess weight put on by these unhealthy eating habits can strain the spine by shifting the center of gravity farther away from the back. Eating a healthy diet filled with whole, natural foods is a great way to take control of many aspects of your well-being.

Smoking and Drinking 

If you still need one more reason to quit these habits, or at least reduce them drastically, keep in mind they can cause a great deal of physical discomfort in the long run. Nicotine and alcohol both increase the body’s inflammatory response. Nicotine is also known to increase the degeneration of discs in the spine, as well as reduce the amount of calcium absorption in your bones, which decreases their strength. 


These classic and easily acquired bad habits can and should be stopped for better overall health. If it’s too difficult to simply quit cold turkey, try instead to focus on replacing them with better habits.
