Why You Should Care About Non-GMO Foods

These days, it seems as if there are so many different aspects of our food we need to be worried about. Buzzwords such as “organic,” “grass-fed,” and “free-range” have all infiltrated our grocery stores, making them impossible to ignore. As confusing as they may be, it’s a good idea to take these modifications into consideration if you want to live a healthy lifestyle. One of the most common labels you may see is “Non-GMO.” There are a lot of misconceptions regarding non-GMO foods floating around, so it’s helpful to know how important this really is in terms of your diet. 

What is Non-GMO?

The term non-gmo stands for non-genetically modified foods. Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are not natural, as they are created in laboratories using special engineering techniques which modify the genetic material of the food. Many scientists, nutritionists, and environmental activists have spoken out against the nature of genetically modifying food, citing various negative impacts this can have on the health of the environment as well as people. 

How GMOs are Created

In a laboratory setting, scientists will extract genetic material from one organism and implant it into another, in the hopes of giving that second organism a desirable trait from the first one. While this has the potential to be helpful for encouraging heartier crops to grow in extreme climates, GMOs mostly consist of crops being modified in order to be resistant to certain pesticides. Common GMOs you may consume include corn, soy, alfalfa, zucchini, and milk. 

What are the Risks to Your Health?

One of the most concerning aspects of GMOs is that when scientists implant new genetic material into a crop, it’s unknown where exactly that material goes in the DNA structure. This can lead to the creation of certain proteins or substances which have never been in the natural food supply before, which can give rise to new allergies and sensitivities. The technology used in this type of procedure can also make crops more vulnerable to bacteria and viruses. Combine this knowledge with the fact that studies have found certain toxins and pesticides lingering in the blood stream of humans and animals who have consumed GMOs, and you’ll see why it’s good to steer clear of these foods.

The next time you’re stocking up on groceries, take a little extra time to look for foods marked as “non-GMO.” Ideally, you’ll consume mostly whole, raw, or unprocessed foods for optimal nutrition.
