4 Winter Myths Debunked

If your mother always told you never go outside without your jacket when it’s cold or to blow dry your wet hair before bed to avoid catching a cold, you may have been getting false information.  The poor winter season is getting a bad rap when it comes to people believing that it causes sickness.  Check out the following four myths about this season.

Cold Weather Can Make You Sick

False!  Did you know that the cells in your body that fight off sickness actually escalate when you go out into the cold?  Awesome, right? According to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, the viruses that cause colds grow the best in approximately 91 degree temperatures.

Don’t Exercise In The Cold

Who told you this?  Well they’re wrong!  Exercising in the cold can boost your endorphin levels because you’re getting a faster, harder workout. In fact, just being outside when it’s cold can increase your endorphins as well.  Fascinating!  So don’t use the winter weather as an excuse not to exercise.

No Need To Wear Sunscreen In The Winter

This couldn’t be further from the truth.  “[T]he Earth’s surface is closer to the sun during the winter months, we are actually exposed to more harmful rays without even realizing it,” says Robert Guida, MD, a board-certified plastic surgeon in New York City.  And if you live in snowy climates, the ice and snow can reflect about 80 percent of the damaging UV rays so they can touch your skin twice!  

Lack Of Sunlight In Winter Causes Depression

Besides SAD (seasonal affective disorder) that only affects five percent of Americans, winter isn’t really making people depressed.  It’s what’s happening during this time that can upset people.  Such as holiday madness, visiting relatives, and being overly busy.
