Which Organic Foods Should You Buy?

Organic Vegetable BoxesThere is so much talk about organic versus non-organic foods these days. It is hard to keep up, especially when it comes to produce! On one hand, you want to eat as healthy as possible, and on the other hand, you are not about to shell out $5 for one organic bell pepper.

One of the most important things to know is that eating fresh fruits and vegetables is highly beneficial, even if they are not from the organic section. However, it is wise to reduce as many pesticides as possible when eating a healthy diet. Buying organic produce from the dirty dozen list will help you avoid major pesticides and chemicals. Also, remember organic or not, it is always wise to wash your produce thoroughly before you eat it.

The Dirty Fifteen

Here are the top fifteen dirty foods. These varieties of produce contain the most pesticides, and therefore it is better for you to buy them organically grown or avoid eating them all together. Some organic produce is easier to find in the frozen section and can be more cost efficient, as well.

  • Apples
  • Celery
  • Collard Greens and Kale
  • Strawberries
  • Summer Squash and Zucchini
  • Nectarines
  • Peaches
  • Potatoes
  • Sweet Bell Peppers
  • Grapes
  • Hot Peppers
  • Spinach
  • Tomatoes
  • Cherries
  • Cucumbers

The Clean Fifteen

The following foods are naturally less likely to have a lot of pesticides on them. Of course, feel free to buy them organic if you wish. However, if you would like to save a little bit of money on your grocery bill, here are the fifteen produce items you can buy conventionally.

  • Corn
  • Asparagus
  • Avocado
  • Cabbage
  • Cantaloupe
  • Eggplant
  • Grapefruit
  • Kiwi
  • Mangos
  • Mushrooms
  • Onions
  • Papayas
  • Pineapple
  • Frozen Sweet Peas
  • Sweet Potatoes

Now that you know which produce to purchase from the organic section, get shopping. Summer is the perfect time to enjoy all the fruits and vegetables you love. Try grilling your favorite vegetables or fruits for a true summer taste.
